相信大家不管在自己练习,还是在考试时做Summary Written Text的时候,都遇到过这种情况:这句看起来好像是keypoint,写下来…那句也是,写下来…这里有转折,写下来…那里有总结,写下来…最后列了一大堆句子,可是字数要求放在那,没办法全写下来,就只好开始选择困难症。用这个?还是用那个句子?万一正好放弃的这句话是重点内容怎么办?然后时间就一分一秒过去,只能硬着头皮留着一个顺眼的。


是不是激起了大家痛苦的回忆呢?不用担心,今天Michael老师就为大家带来SWT筛选Key Points的技巧——

SWT遇到疑似Key Points的时候怎么办?



首先我们来看一道PTE考试真题,大家可以先自行做做看:



Armed police have been brought into NSW schools to reduce crimerates and educate students. The 40 School Liaison Police (SLP) officers have been allocated to public and private high schools across the state.


Organizers say the officers, who began work last week, will buildpositive relationships between police and students. But parent groups warned of potential dangers of armed police working at schools in communities where police relations were already under strain.


Among their duties, the SLPs will conduct crime prevention workshops, talking to students about issues including shoplifting, offensive behavior, graffiti and drugs and alcohol. They can also advise school principals. One SLP, Constable Ben Purvis, began work in the inner Sydney region last week, including at Alexandria Park Community School’s senior campus. Previously stationed as a crime prevention officer at The Rocks, he now has 27 schools under his jurisdiction in areas including The Rocks, Redfern and Kings Cross.


Constable Purvis said the full-time position would see him workingon the broader issues of crime prevention. “I am not a security guard,” he said. “I am not there to patrol the school. We want to improve relationships between police and school children, to have positive interaction. We are coming to the school and giving them knowledge to improve their own safety." The use offake ID among older students is among the issues he has already discussed with principals. Parents' groups responded to the program positively, but said it may spark a range of community reactions. "It is a good thing and aninnovative idea and there could be some positive benefits," Council of Catholic School Parents executive officer Danielle Cronin said. "Different communities will respond to this kind of presence in different ways.




利用我们课上讲授给大家SWT寻找key points的技巧,相信大家所找出的关键内容,都被涵盖在下面这段话中:



 

Armed police have been brought into NSW schools to reduce crimerates and educate students, and the officers will build positive relationships between police and students,but parent groups warned of potential dangers ofarmed police working at schools, and the SLPs will conduct crime prevention workshops, and they can also advise school principals, and the full-time position would see him working on the broader issues of crime prevention, andthey want to improve relationships between police and school children, to have positive interaction and give them knowledge to improve their own safety, and parents said it may spark a range of community reactions, and it is a goodthing and an innovative idea and there could be some positive benefits, and different communities will respond to this kind of presence in different ways. (133 words)


这段话一共有133个字,显然是超过了SWT题目75个的最大字数要求。但是这里也是一个极端情况,我们列出了所有可能被大家划分为Key points的语句。相信大多数同学都会在其中几个语句间纠结不知如何取舍才好。那接下来,我们就来具体看看如何合理地取舍吧。

我们先看看下面这三句话——

But parent groupswarned of potential dangers of armed police working at schools in communitieswhere police relations were already under strain.

Parents' groupsresponded to the program positively, but said it may spark a range of communityreactions. 


Different communities will respond to this kind ofpresence in different ways.

这三句话中的前两句都是含有but,表示转折的语句,很多同学都会非常下意识地将这一的句子视作关键内容,但是如果我们将他们与最后一句话Different communities will respond to this kind ofpresence in different ways.进行比较,就会发现其实最后一句话是对前两句话的高度概括。最后一句话的意思是,不同的社区会对于武装警察入驻校园这件事有不同的反应;而第一句则说的是,一些家长团体担心,在警察和当地居民关系紧张的社区,武装警察的入驻会有潜在危险;第二句则是说,家长团体对于这个program反响积极,但是他们认为这个program可能会激起不同程度的社区反应

剖析这三句话之后,我们就会发现,其实前两句所说的正是第三句话提到的respond in different ways的具体表现。所以前面这两句话,尽管是but转折,但他们并不是关键内容,都不如最后一句话概括得全面。

是不是有点感觉了?我们再来看这几句话。

The full-time position would see him working on the broader issues of crime prevention.

We are coming to theschool and giving them knowledge to improve their own safety.

The SLPs will conduct crime prevention workshops.


前两句分别是段首的第一句话,以及文中的officer自述的自己来到学校的目的,同样是有可能会被同学们划分为key points的内容。

我们用同样的思路比较这三句话就会发现,第三句所说的crime prevention workshops同样是涵盖了前两句所说的内容。因为crime prevention根据文中的信息,就是officers为大家讲授安全知识,规范行为的课程,因此这前两句所提的issues of crime prevention和give themknowledge to improve their own safety都是一致的。细心的同学会发现,第一句话和最后一句甚至重复出现了一个关键词crime prevention,因此,这里的前两句我们同样可以舍弃。


一下4个大肠(划掉)大长句都没了是不是很舒爽!别急,还有一句话!


We want to improve relationships between police and school children, to have positive interaction.

The officers will build positive relationships between police and students.


第一句同样是来自officer的自述,紧跟在improve their own safety之后,如果你认为前一句是重点,这一句也很有可能会被划为重点

好的,在文章的末尾,我们就要皮一下给大家留个小作业,大家自己来取舍一下这两句应该选取哪一句,以及为什么。


进行筛选之后,我们答案就非常的清爽了:


Armed police have been brought into NSW schools to reduce crimerates and educate students, and officers will build positive relationships between police and students, and SLPs will conduct Crime prevention workshops,and they can also advise school principal, and it is a good thing and aninnovative idea and there could be some positive benefits, and differentcommunities will respond to this kind of presence in different way. (69 words)


只有69个字,强迫症表示非常开心。

最后我们来总结一下,SWT遇到纠结的内容应该怎么办:


1.先标记出来,把首尾的词记在笔记本上

2.过完全文之后,将疑似Key Points列出,与可确定的key points比较,或相互之间进行比较

3.筛去其中重复的内容,留下表达最为简洁的语句

4.填写答案

5.以上过程在练习时进行,熟练之后可以自己在脑内直接筛选


最后一点非常重要,这个过程其实并不适合在考试时使用,因为我们只有10分钟的时间,而是适合在平时练习的时候,帮助自己理清逻辑顺序,提高自己对于关键信息的甄别、筛选以及逻辑层面的划分能力,持之以恒,大家就能做到自己一边做题,一边在大脑中对这些句子进行分级、筛选,最后做到直接略过这些内容啦!
